18103	ALFRED "AL" HAIR- HIGHWAYMEN OIL ON BOARD The sun starts a day in the everglades. The sky is luminescent with hues of purple and orange. A large cypress tree basks as the first rays of light reach its branches, which are covered in Spanish moss. Signed in bottom right corner and framed. Size: 35 x 23" Condition: VGC
18104	ALBERT E. BACKUS - PASTEL & LETTERS OF NELLIE WOOD Albert Earnest "Bean" Backus pastel painting of his girlfriend, Nellie Wood O'Riordan. Pastel on felt. Backus's family tried fervently to hide her identity from the public. Nellie was known as the recipient of "The Golden Poet Award" in 1989, and her book, "Rhymes and Reasons," was quite successful. This lot also includes a rare grouping correspondence letters between Nellie and her long-time friends. All of the letters are signed, and each one mentions "Beanie," Backus's nickname. The letters are so evocative, that one can easily imagine moments between lovers. Her letters also vividly describe her social mileu as an invited guest at the Florida's Governor's Mansion (in Tallahassee, FL) and a notation following Backus's death, Nellie described how Backus had told her that he wasn't feeling well and goes on to say that he died later that day. Also included are limited edition postcards (unused) and an Easter card, all featuring Backus's works. Nellie's book, "Rhymes and Reasons", is also part of this lot. A unique and interesting Backus art and ephemera lot. The pastel has also includes authentication and appraised by the A.E. Backus gallery in Ft. Pierce, FL. Size: 16" x 13" Condition: VGC

Albert Ernest (A.E.) Backus oil painting of a sailboat on board attracted the Florida art collectors on July 30th. Albert "Beanie" Backus (American, 1906 - 1995) is perhaps the most well known Florida Landscape artist to ever live. Original Backus paintings continue to attract the collectors and command great value in the market. This particular Backus oil painting of a sailboat would have been one of his many Caribbean works, as Backus had enormous love for the Caribbean and spent a great deal of time at his second home in Jamaica. Collectors were delighted to have this painting brought to market, with an Internet bidding adding it to his collection for $9105 (inclusive of buyers premium).

Backus was primarily a self-taught painter who cut his teeth as an early commercial painter of signs, billboards and movie marquees. From there he progressed to landscape paintings, where over the years he refined his art from palette and knife to more brush work. His paintings were known for coming to life and captivating the viewer.

Albert Ernest "Bean" Backus (American 1906 - 1991). Painting of a sailboat. One of his “Caribbean” paintings. Known as the "Dean of Florida painters" and the man who began the story of the African American Highwaymen painters, Backus was responsible for teaching and mentoring Al Hair who, in turn, taught the others. Some of the original Florida Highwaymen are still painting today. This painting depicts a small sail boat at sea, signed bottom right.

The Original Florida Highwaymen artists will visit Manor Auctions Tallahasseee gallery this Saturday, May 7th. A group of the Original Florida Highwaymen will be painting, selling works and speaking with the public during Manor Auctions Fine Art & Collectible Auction. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to plan a visit to meet this historic group of African American Florida landscape artists. Their unique style of painting has come to define Florida landscape art, distinguished by the use of rich, vibrant color applied typically to Upson board. The Highwaymen were inducted in to the Florida Artists Hall Of Fame in 2004. Their paintings can be found in private collections, galleries, museums and government buildings. The Highwaymen will be at Manor Auctions Tallahassee gallery from 10am through the early evening hours.

The Florida Highwaymen movement began in the early 1950’s when A.E. Backus, a prominent White artist in S. Florida began teaching Alfred Hair, a little known African-American art student who was eager to make a career in painting. Their unlikely partnership began what would become known as the Florida Highwaymen.

The Florida beach scene realized about $1500, followed by a smaller Harold Newton (not in the original frame) which brought about $1100.
